UMass, partner land Navy antimicrobial research grant
By Mass High Tech Staff
The University of Massachusetts and its research partner PolyMedix Inc. have won a Navy grant to study the best antimicrobial compounds for military uses.
The Office of Naval Research awarded UMass and Pennsylvania-based PolyMedix (OTC BB: PYMX) the $99,000 Phase 1 Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) contract to discover lead antimicrobial compounds based on PolyMedix’s novel small molecule defensin-mimetics for activity against bacterial pathogens, with a particular focus on Acinetobacter. Acinetobacter is a Gram-negative bacteria which can cause pneumonia, and is highly resistant to currently available antibiotic drugs.
PolyMedix will get $69,890 in the first phase of the contract, to be paid out over six months, with an optional extension which may provide an additional $29,948 of funding for continued work which would be done together with Gregory Tew of the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
