By Mass High Tech Staff
Defense contractor Ceradyne Inc. reports its Salem, N.H.-based unit has been awarded Marine Corps contracts worth approximately $1.2 million for new test helmets using advanced materials.
Ceradyne (Nasdaq: CRDN) says the Developmental Test Helmets should be delivered to the U.S. Marine Corps Systems Command within 30 days. The contract awards came about from a solicitation by the Marine Corps., according to Ceradyne officials. If the helmets test well, the government has the option of buying a minimum of 310 helmets and a maximum of 246,840 helmets over the next two years.
Last month Ceradyne, based in Costa Mesa, Calif., bought for an undisclosed amount Salem-based helmet manufacturer, Diaphorm Technologies LLC which was working on prototype combat helmets.
A joint Marine and Army program is working on the Enhanced Combat Helmet, which will provide greater levels of protection over current military helmets, using advanced technical ceramic products.
