Online obit firm Tributes.com closes $1.2M financing round

By Mass High Tech staff

Tributes Inc., a Boston-based online obituary news and tributes service, has closed a $1.2 million second round of funding, bringing the company’s total financing to $5.4 million. The company did not disclose its investors, but the Tributes.com website says that Eons Inc. and Dow Jones & Company backed the firm.

To date, Tributes has developed strategic partnerships with insurance provider Forethought Financial Group, death-care industry products and services provider Stewart Enterprises, custom funeral home website developer FuneralNet and death-care marketing firm MKJ Marketing. Tributes has also added obituary sections to television station websites, including Raycom Media, CBS Television Stations Group and CBC New Media Group.

Tributes.com was founded in February of 2008 by Monster.com founder Jeff Taylor. Taylor also founded Charlestown-based online baby-boomer community Eons.com.
