By Mass High Tech staff
Biogen Idec Inc. co-founder Phillip Sharp has announced plans to retire from the company’s board of directors, a role he’s held since 1982.
Sharp won the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1993 for discovering split genes, and in 2006, he was awarded a National Medal of Science. Sharp currently serves as Institute Professor at MIT in the biology department and the Center for Cancer Research. He has worked as director of the Center for Cancer Research from 1985 to 1991, as head of the Department of Biology from 1991 to 1999, and as director of the McGovern Institute for Brain Research at MIT from 2000 to 2004.
Biogen NV was founded in 1978 after several biologists worldwide met in Geneva, Switzerland, and decided to form a new pharmaceutical firm, according to the Biogen Idec web site. Five years later, in 1983, Biogen held its initial public offering.
Biogen Idec (Nasdaq: BIIB) produces drugs for patients in more than 90 countries. Its drugs treat diseases such as multiple sclerosis, lymphoma and rheumatoid arthritis.
