MBC, MassEcon rates cities, towns for biotech; Lowell ranks highest
By Mass High Tech staff
In its second round of municipality ratings, the Massachusetts Biotechnology Council and MassEcon have rated seven communities as “BioReady” — that is, ready to be marketed to biotechnology companies seeking relocation or expansion.
Among the ratings, Lowell achieved the sole platinum level; Chelmsford, Marlborough and Somerville received silver ratings; and Newton, Hatfield and Norfolk received bronze ratings. In total, MBC and MassEcon have rated 51 communities since the BioReady Communities Campaign was launched in Massachusetts in 2008.
According to the BioReady Community Campaign web site, the marketing tool acknowledges efforts cities and towns have made to “adopt local policies that greatly ease the pathway for renovation or new construction of biotech laboratory and manufacturing facilities.” Among the noted efforts favoring the biotechnology industry are public infrastructure projects, pre-permitted biotech sites, expedited permitting policies, by-right zoning and planned area developments.
