KVH deal pulls in $2.5M for remote weapon systems

By Brendan Lynch

KVH Industries Inc. has landed $2.5 million for precision fiber-optic gyros used in remote weapon systems.

Under the subcontract deal, Middletown, R.I.-based KVH (Nasdaq: KVHI) will supply the unnamed defense contractor with its DSP-3100 fiber optic gyros. The gyros are used in remote weapon systems, which enable soldiers to fire weapons from inside a vehicle, rather than from an exposed turret position. The gyros are intended to keep the weapon steady while the vehicle is moving. Shipment of the gyros is expected to be completed by the end of the year, according to KVH.

KVH had a busy April. The navigation and communications equipment company landed three deals worth about $6 million total. The company landed $1 million from an unnamed customer for its CNS-5000 self-contained navigation system. Combining the company’s fiber optic gyro-based inertial measurement technology with GPS from a partner, the CNS-5000 can provide precise position and orientation, even if GPS signals are blocked, according to KVH officials.

KVH also received three contracts worth about $1.3 million from unnamed “international prime contractors,” for tactical navigation systems.  The company additionally pulled in $3.8 million in new orders for its precision fiber-optic gyro system for use in commercial and military applications, including weapon systems.

KVH reported $82 million in revenue in 2008, with $3 million in net income.
