Pro-Pharmaceuticals Inc., a Newton-based clinical and development stage pharmaceutical firm, has added Gilbert Omenn to its scientific advisory board.

Gilbert is professor of internal medicine, human genetics and public health at the University of Michigan, as well as director of the Center for Computational Medicine and Bioinformatics at the university. He previously served as the CEO of the University of Michigan Health System and dean of the School of Public Health and Community Medicine and professor of medicine at the University of Washington. He is the current vice president of the International Human Proteome Organization, and he has written more than 460 research papers, and has authored or edited 18 books.

Omenn graduated with a doctorate degree in genetics from the University of Washington, a master’s degree from Harvard Medical School and a bachelor’s degree from Princeton University.

“My research in cancer biology and chemoprevention piqued my interests in Pro-Pharmaceuticals’ novel technology approach to treating cancers with carbohydrate compounds,” Omenn said in a press release.

Pro-Pharmaceuticals is focused on discovering and developing carbohydrate-based compounds for the treatment of cancer, liver, microbial and inflammatory diseases. The company’s lead product candidate, Davanat, is intended to address cell development and its role in tumor cell survival, angiogenesis and tumor metastasis.
