EnVivo drug test reveals Alzheimer’s reversal

By Mass High Tech staff

Watertown drug developer EnVivo Pharmaceuticals Inc. has announced positive results, including a reversal of behavior characteristic of Alzheimer’s disease in animal testing, for its drug candidate EVP-0962.

The drug, a gamma-secretase modulator, is designed to block production of the peptide AB42, which is associated with Alzheimer’s. According to EnVivo officials, EVP-0962 works with one dose and does so without inhibiting other normal functions.

The results have prompted EnVivo to go into preclinical development in anticipation of clinical trials in 2010.

Privately held EnVivo focuses on drug development related to central nervous system disorders, including Huntington’s disease, in addition to schizophrenia and Alzheimer’s disease. The company last received funding in the amount of $65 million from a fourth-round venture capital financing, led by Fidelity Biosciences. In April, the company announced that it had signed a licensing agreement for its schizophrenia and Alzheimer’s disease treatment, EVP-6124, with Mitsubishi Tanabe Pharma Corp. (MTPC).
