Chelsea Collaborative has received $1.9 million in stimulus funding from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for two clean diesel emissions projects.
The funds, provided under the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act, will support the New England Produce Market’s repowering of 79 diesel-fired refrigeration units with all-electric units. It will also support an effort by the city of Chelsea to retrofit 19 diesel vehicles and equipment.
Chelsea Collaborative is an organization dedicated to improving the social, environmental and economic health of the Chelsea community.
“Investing in clean diesel projects through the recovery act is a down payment on protecting health, improving air quality, helping the economy and creating jobs in our communities,” said Ira Leighton, acting regional administrator of EPA’s New England office, in a statement. “New England has some of the highest rates of asthma in the country. By reducing diesel emissions — especially in urban areas — we are helping thousands of our neighbors to breathe easier.”
The New England region received over 30 grant applications worth $35.8 million to fund clean diesel emissions projects under the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act’s National Clean Diesel Funding Assistance Program.
