Monster Worldwide Inc. (NYSE: MWW) has cut 50 jobs at its Maynard facility, part of a layoff that eliminated 160 positions globally, the company reported today. At the same time, Monster will open a new research and development facility in Cambridge’s Kendall Square, and is already recruiting for 80 new technical positions to staff the new center — which can accommodate as many as 170 employees, the company said.
The layoffs were first reported by a recruiting blog earlier this week, but the company, with headquarters in New York and offices in Maynard, declined to confirm reports until today. According to a news release issued by the company, this week’s reorganization consolidated the company’s employer and job seeker product development teams.
According to one manager-level employee laid off from the Maynard site, who asked not to be named, the layoffs affected staff members who had been working on the integration of the Trovix Inc. semantic job search product, which it acquired last year for $72.5 million.
Monster responded Thursday, saying the core team brought over with the Trovix acquisition remains intact and the company plans to add employees working on the search product at its Cambridge facility.
“There's no instability on that team. We're not losing people; we're not reducing them. Quite the opposite,” said company spokeswoman Janet Swaysland, adding that search capability remains a “primary focus.”
The online job search company is calling its new facility the Technology Center of Excellence and Innovation. Monster CEO Sal Iannuzzi said the company’s relaunch of its employer and job seeker sites has brought a need for different skills as the company seeks to innovate. The new center will provide the resources to build on strategic investments, Iannuzzi said in the statement.
