Cambridge-based Millennium Pharmaceuticals and its parent company, Japan-based Takeda Pharmaceutical Company Ltd. announced a new Phase 2 trial for its potential treatment for non small-cell lung cancer.
Company officials say current pre-clinical data suggest that the drug candidate, CBP501, has the potential to induce cancer cell death through a mechanism of action that blocks the ability of cancer cells to transition through the cell cycle. Data from a previous Phase 1 study indicate that CBP501 may enhance anti-cancer cytotoxic activity when combined with selected chemotherapeutic drugs.
Last month, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration gave Millennium a slap on the wrist because of an advertisement for the company’s multiple-myeloma drug, Velcade, in which the FDA called the promotion “false or misleading because it overstates” the product’s effectiveness. The promotional materials in question were mailed to doctors ahead of the 2008 meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology in Chicago. Typically, such so-called “reminder labeling” is not regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
