Court favors Internet security firm, Kaspersky Lab

Kaspersky Lab Inc. has won immunity in a court case that pitted customers of Zango against the Woburn-based security software firm. The case, which offered an unprecendented ruling, involved Zango users who claimed the software interfered with Zango’s downloadable programs.
Zango is a provider of free online videos, games and music. According to a release from Kaspersky Lab officials, Kaspersky’s software targeted Zango software as malware and, as a result, “protected” users from downloading it.
The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that “Kaspersky is entitled to Good Samaritan immunity.” The ruling enables consumers to determine their own levels of software protection and adjust accordingly to the security levels determined by the anti-malware companies, like Kaspersky.
According to the company, Kaspersky Lab is considered the world’s largest privately held Internet security company, protecting against viruses, spyware, hackers and spam. The company was among the Internet security firms that worked on stymying the Conficker worm virus earlier this year.
