Bhatia, Best, Kivel join Aura Biosciences advisory boards
By Julie M. Donnelly
Aura Biosciences, a Cambridge-based biotechnology company focused on new drug delivery methods, has added three Boston-area advisors to its leadership team.
Lawrence Best, chairman of OXO Capital and former chief financial officer of Boston Scientific, will join Aura’s board of directors. Between 1992 and 2007, he served as executive vice president, head of strategic build and CFO for Boston Scientific.
Sangeeta Bhatia, professor of health sciences and technology and professor of electrical engineering and computer science at MIT, joins Aura’s scientific advisory board. She is a member of the Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research and the Harvard Stem Cell Institute, an associate member of the Broad Institute, and a biomedical engineer at Brigham & Women’s Hospital. Bhatia, the co-founder of Hepregen Corp., was named a 2009 Woman to Watch by Mass High Tech.
Richard Kivel, CEO of Theragenetics Ltd., joins Aura’s Corporate Advisors. Since April 2006, he has served as CEO of the UK-based genetic diagnostics company. Prior to TheraGenetics, Kivel worked with and built multiple startups, including as CEO of MolecularWare, Inc. In 2002, Kivel was named a Mass High Tech All-Star.
Aura Biosciences launched in January after raising $3 million in private funding. Aura is focused on using nanotechnology to improve drug delivery. The company expects to file an Investigational New Drug Application with the FDA next year for its first so-called “Nanosmart” drug. The early stage drug candidate is a potential treatment for pancreatic cancer.
