UMass awards $1M grants to spur R&D

The University of Massachusetts reports it has given $1 million in research and economic development grants to faculty members at the school’s five campuses.

The 15 grants range in size from $15,000 to $170,000, and include projects in biofuels research, green computing, personalized cancer therapy, green jobs and entrepreneurship.

The winners include Susan Leschine, founder of UMass Amherst spinout Qteros Inc.

The Science and Technology and Creative Economy awards programs were established by President Jack Wilson in 2004 and 2007 respectively, as part of the university’s efforts to support faculty research and promote economic development in Massachusetts. University licensing income is the source of funding for the awards.

The following projects won funding under the President’s Science and Technology Initiatives Fund:

• Massachusetts Green Computing Initiative: Sustainable IT for a Knowledge Economy; Rick Adrion and Prashant Shenoy, UMass Amherst
• Effects of Climate on the New England Environment; Ray Bradley and Rick Palmer, UMass Amherst
• The Institute for Massachusetts Biofuels Research (TIMBR); Danny Schnell, Susan Leschine and Michael Henson, UMass Amherst
• Center for Personalized Cancer Therapy; Andrew Grosovsky, UMass Boston with partners at Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer Center
• Interdisciplinary Center in Drug Resistance; Celia Schiffer, UMass Worcester with partners at UMass Amherst

The following projects won funding under the President’s Creative Economy Initiatives Fund

• Youth and Shakespeare:  Reconstructing the Connection; Arthur Kinney, UMass Amherst
• Place Attachment and Entrepreneurship in the Massachusetts Economy; Henry Renski, UMass Amherst
• Electronic Gaming in Massachusetts:  Baseline Study and Industry Analysis; Pacey Foster and David Terkla, UMass Boston
• Developing Green Jobs and Career Paths: Joan Becker, UMass Boston, Robert Peck, UMass Dartmouth, David Turcotte, UMass Lowell
• The Massachusetts Midwifery Workforce Profile Project; Christa Kelleher, UMass Boston
• Weaving the Rainbow: Pathways to the Sciences; Grant O’Reilly, UMass Dartmouth
• Readings with Paintings on Movable Walls; Robert Forrant, UMass Lowell
• Lowell Youth Orchestra and New Concert Series; Kay George Roberts, UMass Lowell
