Inotek Pharmaceuticals Corp. has announced positive results from a Phase 1/2 trial for their lead drug candidate, a potential treatment for glaucoma.
Researchers found that the drug target, called INO-8875, reduced intraocular pressure by a statistically significant amount. Intraocular pressure is a risk factor for vision loss associated with glaucoma and is thought to be one of the causes of the disease.
The privately-held, Lexington-based company is now looking to outlicense the drug to a company outside the U.S., and it is in discussion with potential partners, company officials said. The company would retain the U.S. rights to the drug candidate and potentially commercialize the drug, if Phase 3 trials are successful.
Company officials say that there are few glaucoma drug candidates in clinical trials, and with an increasing population of elderly people, the market for glaucoma medications is on the rise.
Inotek was issued two patents from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for INO-8875, as well as its INO-4885 for contrast-induced nephropathy.
Glaucoma is the leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide, affecting more than 65 million people.
