Abiomed succeeds in artificial heart implant
By Mass High Tech staff
Abiomed Inc., a Danvers-based maker of cardiac medical devices, has performed its first successful implant of the AbioCor Total Replacement Heart since it was used in clinical trials in 2006. The implant took place at the Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Jersey.
The AbioCor artifical heart found its match in a 76-year-old patient who failed to qualify for a heart transplant following congestive, end-stage heart failure. The company has said that its AbioCor implant is intended for patients with end-stage heart failure, typically awaiting transplants.
Abiomed announced last year that it had received approval from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) for coverage of the AbioCor. As a result, hospitals can now get reimbursement for the cost of the AbioCor replacement heart and the cost of implanting the device for Medicare beneficiaries enrolled in U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved studies that meet certain guidelines set by CMS.
Employing 377 workers, Abiomed (Nasdaq: ABMD) reported a net loss of $41 million on total revenue of $59 million for 2008.
