American Science and Engineering Inc. reports it has won a patent infringement suit against three New Jersey companies.
A federal district court in Norfolk, Va., ruled that the 888SDZ X-ray inspection system made by AutoClear LLC, Control Screening LLC, and Scan-Tech Security LP, of Fairfield, N.J., infringes on AS&E’s technology using backscatter and transmission detection to screen luggage, parcels, baggage, and other items.
Under the terms of a settlement agreement, the Billerica-based company will issue a limited license under the infringed patent. Financial terms of the license and other terms of the settlement were not disclosed.
AS&E was represented in the litigation by the Boston intellectual property law firm Bromberg & Sunstein LLP and by the Norfolk law firm Willcox and Savage PC.
In May, AS&E brought in more than $30 million in contracts for screening systems.
The company landed $25 million from an unnamed Middle Eastern country for its Z Portal cargo and vehicle screening and OmniView Gantry cargo inspection systems.
The company also brought in $2.2 million from an unnamed European customs agency for service and maintenance on cargo X-ray inspection systems.
Lastly, AS&E landed $4.7 million for its cargo screening vans. Under the contract, the Billerica-based company is delivering multiple Z Backscatter Vans to an unnamed law enforcement agency which will use them to scan vehicles at border crossings and other checkpoints to detect illegal drugs and other contraband.
AS&E reported a fiscal 2008 net income of $17.5 million on revenue of $166.7 million.
