Pratt & Whitney in $233M jet engine deal
By Mass High Tech staff
Pratt & Whitney reports it has landed $233 million from Qatar Airways for 24 jet engines.
Under the contract, Pratt & Whitney will provide the International Aero Engines (IAE) V2500 to Qatar Airways. IAE is an aircraft engine consortium composed of Pratt & Whitney, Rolls-Royce PLC, the Japanese Aero Engines Corp. and MTU Aero Engines GMBH. Qatar Airlines operates 21 Airbus A320s on the V2500.
Pratt & Whitney will deliver 20 engines to be used on A320s and four to be used on Airbus A321s.
The V2500 engine, which airlines began using last October, is intended to perform with an additional 1 percent fuel burn advantage and a corresponding reduction in carbon dioxide emissions.
Earlier this year, the East Hartford, Conn.-based United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX) subsidiary brought in two contracts from the U.S. Air Force, totaling almost $300 million.
In February, Pratt & Whitney landed a $285 million contract from the U.S. Air Force to provide maintenance for its F119 engines and the F-22 Raptor fighter plane.
In January, Pratt & Whitney landed a deal worth up to $7 million from the Air Force for jet engines, according to the company. Under the deal, the company will provide eight F119 engines for the F-22 Raptor fighter plane. The contract also includes an option to buy up to 39 additional engines. Each F-22 Raptor runs on two F119 engines.
United Technologies reported a 2008 net income of $4.7 billion on revenue of $58.7 billion.
