BioEnergy forms new biochemical firm, Myriant
By Mass High Tech staff
Quincy-based BioEnergy International LLC, a developer of biorefineries, has formed a separate company, Myriant Technologies LLC, to handle bio-based chemicals and intellectual property. BioEnergy focuses on alternative fuels.
BioEnergy chairman and CEO Stephen Gatto said in a statement that the two businesses had been operating separately even when they were combined as one entity.
Myriant’s staff will consist of the biologists, engineers and chemists who filled the same role as former BioEnergy staff members. The company will continue development of a polylactic acid aimed at resolving thermal stability issues, which would open up PLA in its engineering and plastics applications. Myriant, which will also be headquartered in Quincy, maintains an 18,000-square-foot laboratory in Woburn. The company just announced last November that it had expanded its lease at the site.
BioEnergy expects to maintain a 110 million gallon-per-day ethanol plant in Clearfield, Pa., to open in January.
BioEnergy International has developed proprietary technology used in the conversion of cellulosic sugars into chemicals and fuels. The company hopes to use sugars to produce fuels and other materials, such as plastics and fabrics.
