Army, Navy deals add up to $38M for BAE

By Brendan Lynch

BAE Systems Inc. reports its Electronic Solutions unit has landed two contracts worth more than $38 million from the U.S. military.

The Nashua, N.H.-based unit brought in $33.6 million from the U.S. Navy for production of the AN/ALE-55, part of the U.S. Navy’s Integrated Defensive Electronic Countermeasures (IDECM) system that provides fighter aircraft with electronic defense against radar-guided missiles.

The ALE-55 consists of an onboard electronic frequency converter (EFC) and a fiber-optic towed device (FOTD). The EFC converts radio frequencies to light that is transferred over a fiber-optic cable to a transmitter in the FOTD that jams missile threats to the aircraft, according to BAE. BAE began production of the system in June 2008. The company said it has delivered 473 FOTDs. The deal brings BAE’s total for work on the ALE-55 to $65.6 million.

Electronic Solutions also brought in $5.1 million for the continued development of a digital night-vision goggle for the U.S. Army. Under the deal, the company will produce five enhanced night vision goggles (ENVG(D)) for testing in fiscal 2010. The goggles digitally combine visible, low-light and infrared imagery. BAE developed the system, its first helmet-mounted goggle system, in 2008 for the Army’s PEO Soldier Enhanced Night Vision Goggle advanced technology development program.

BAE Systems Inc. is the U.S. subsidiary of United Kingdom-based BAE Systems PLC and is headquartered in Rockville, Md. BAE Systems Inc. employs more than 30,000 people. BAE Systems PLC reported $34.4 billion in sales for 2008.
