LogMeIn, Vitality clean up at MITX tech awards

By Galen Moore

On the same day it detailed its plans to make the first initial public offering (IPO) of stock in the third quarter, LogMeIn Inc. made two trips to the podium at the Massachusetts Innovation and Technology Exchange (MITX) technology awards last night, winning in both the mobile technology and customer impact categories.

In the sixth annual MITX tech awards, 50 companies competed for 19 awards. The digital technology, marketing and media trade association also presented a lifetime achievement award to The Droid Works CEO Helen Greiner, a co-founding director at iRobot Corp. The technology awards are one of two conventions hosted each year. MITX’s interactive awards, held in the fall, honor web and creative innovations.

MITX executive director Kiki Mills and executive committee member Emily Nagle Green kicked off the ceremony with comments on the state of the region’s high-tech economy. Green said the trade association has put Boston’s high-tech interactive economy in the spotlight and on the governor’s desk.

Massachusetts’ high-tech momentum is coming from new sectors, which MITX represents, Green said. “It’s not coming from the old-line Route 128 sources any more,” she said. “This is where it’s happening.”

However, the first award of the night went to an enterprise computing company with offices a stone’s throw from Totten Pond Road. Oco Inc. makes business intelligence software designed to be deployed on-demand, over the web. The company has differentiated itself by providing software that can be easily deployed and used in vertical applications, said president and CEO William Copacino, formerly chief executive for global business consulting at Accenture.

Founded in 1999, the company has built its technology from the ground up, said CTO Mike Beckerle, who came from IBM after it had acquired his 1995 startup, Torrent Systems. “In order to do this right from end to end it requires you to take it from the data to the solution,” he said.

A younger company took home an award in the online advertising category. Boston-based ScanScout Inc. launched its online video ad optimization network in 2007. The past eight months have been tough, CTO Steven Lee acknowledged, but the company is seeing a recovery in the advertising market.

“Q1 was slow, but we were on target,” he said. “We’re definitely seeing it pick back up.”

LogMeIn has seen continued success through the downturn –- since it first announced its IPO intentions last January -– because the company’s software product saves users money by enabling remote log-in to desktop computers.

The company now claims 70 million connected devices. Many of its customers are small businesses and “pro-sumers,” like IT professionals, for whom remote log-in saves time and effort traveling from location to location, Burton said.

“People are looking for anything that can help them be more productive in their jobs,” he said.
