SatCon handles power at giant Florida rooftop solar site
By Mass High Tech staff
Power management company SatCon Technology Corp. reports it has installed systems for conditioning power at what officials say is the largest rooftop solar power installation in the southeast United States.
The new 1.1-megawatt rooftop photovoltaic array on top of the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Fla., will use four 250-kilowatt PowerGate Plus inverters from Boston-based SatCon. Through the inverters, the system is expected to deliver more than 1.1 million kilowatt hours in its first year of operation, officials said.
The Orange County Convention Center rooftop system covers 200,000 square feet. A display inside the convention center will show the system data, performance and solar energy information to convention center visitors.
Just last week, SatCon (Nasdaq: SATC) said it is looking to raise $20.2 million in a follow-on public offering.
In September of 2008 SatCon sold its electronics and motor divisions for a total of $5.6 million in cash. The deals, which were part of SatCon’s strategic restructuring plan, enabled the company to focus its financial, technical and marketing resources on the growth of their core photovoltaic and fuel cell power conditioning solutions business, officials said.
SatCon, founded in 1985, makes a variety of alternative energy systems for large-scale distributed power systems. The company sells to both the private sector and government agencies. The company reported a loss of $13.2 million on revenue of $62.5 million for fiscal 2008.
