Caturano and Co., a Boston-based regional CPA firm, has named Christopher MacKenzie as chief operating officer. MacKenzie has served at Caturano for more than 24 years in roles including division leader of the owner-managed business practice as well as a member of the management and technology steering committees. MacKenzie is a graduate of the University of Massachusetts Lowell with a bachelor’s degree in accountancy, and holds two master’s degrees in Taxation and Financial Planning from Bentley University. He is also a recent participant in the Harvard Business School Executive Program.
The Protector Group Insurance Agency Inc. of Worcester has added Laura Ann Mullery to the company as director of compliance and wellness. Mullery will work with the Worcester-based firm’s employee benefits and marketing departments to keep the agency’s clients up to date on complying with state and federal legislation. She previously worked as assistant vice president at William Gallagher Associates in Boston, and vice president for major accounts at Thorbahn Associates in Quincy.
Cathy Heenan has joined the Zeytoonian Center for Dispute Resolution, a Wellesley and Westborough-based firm that provides dispute resolution without litigation for both family law and business clients. Previously, Heenan was an assistant professor of communications at Northeastern University. She is a licensed psychologist and is active in the International Academy of Collaborative Professionals. Heenan received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin in 1967, her master’s in communications from Emerson College in 1969, and her doctorate in counseling psychology from Boston University in 1982.

Online role-playing game developer Turbine Inc. has named M. Beau Paradowski as chief financial officer. Paradowski will replace Peter Faubert, who will remain with Westwood-based Turbine. Paradowski most recently served as CFO at Optasite Inc. of Westborough, through its sale to SBA Communications Corp. for $430 million in July of 2008. Previously, Paradowski also served as CFO for Clearwire Technologies of Dallas, leading its sale to Craig McCaw in 2003. Prior to that, he held various positions at Clear Channel Media, Marcus Cable Co. and PriceWaterhouseCoopers.
Biotech
Worcester’s RXi Pharmaceuticals Corp. has named Richard Chin to the company’s board of directors. Chin is the CEO of Institute for OneWorld Health, a nonprofit pharmaceutical company developing drugs for neglected diseases in developing countries. Chin joined OneWorld Health from OXiGENE, where he served as president and CEO. Previously, Chin served as senior vice president and head of global development for Elan Corp., and has also held various clinical and scientific roles for Genentech Inc. He began his career in industry at Procter & Gamble Pharmaceuticals, where he served as associate medical director.
Microbia Inc. of Lexington has named Alex Chu as vice president of process development, to direct all process development activities from laboratories to commercial manufacturing. Chu was most recently the vice president of manufacturing and process development at Adnexus Therapeutics, Bristol-Myers Squibb. Prior to this, he held multiple scientific and management positions at Abbot Laboratories and Abbott BioResearch Center, including director of manufacturing program management and director, process development, pharma. Chu earned a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from National Taiwan University and a doctorate in biochemical engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Zafgen Inc. of Cambridge has named Matthias Jaffe as chief financial officer and vice president of business development. Prior to joining Zafgen, Jaffe served as chief financial officer in a number of private, venture-backed life sciences organizations, most recently with Alantos Pharmaceuticals, which he led the through its acquisition by Amgen Inc. for more than $300 million in cash. Previously, Jaffe was a principal at Earlybird Venture Capital, based in Munich, Germany, and worked at the Boston Consulting Group, as a member of their pharmaceutical practice group.
