OutStart merges with mobile software firm Hot Lava

By Mass High Tech staff

Learning software maker OutStart Inc. has merged with mobile application firm Hot Lava Software. As part of the merger, the business will operate under the OutStart name, with OutStart president and CEO Massood Zarrabian continuing in his role and Hot Lava CEO Bob Sanregret taking on the role of vice president of the OutStart Hot Lava Mobile business unit.

The merger helps OutStart access the 4.1 billion mobile cell phone users. Company officials said in a press release that the company already has plans to offer Hot Lava’s technology both as a stand-alone solution and as part of OutStart’s social business software package.

Hot Lava Mobile technology enables one-time development of mobile content for any device type, offers a choice of downloadable or WAP-deployed application, and provides mobile content tracking and feedback.

OutStart announced a merger last July with Quebec, Canada-based Eedo Knowledgeware Corp., a developer of tools for business people and learning experts, addressing knowledge management requirements. The combined company at the time expected to employ 130 workers, serving more than 300 customers, with nearly 40 percent of business from international clients.

Boston-based OutStart, founded in 1999, has operated with more than $20 million in venture capital from Sigma Partners, which has an office in Boston, Cambridge-based General Catalyst Partners and Newton Center-based GrandBanks Capital.
