Lycos plans European relaunch

By Galen Moore

Lycos Inc. has recovered its European trademarks from spin-off Lycos Europe, the Waltham-based search and Internet portal company announced yesterday. The trademarks, which include Lycos and Hotbot, had been covered by an exclusive marketing agreement covering the European territory, dating back to 1997, when Lycos Europe was formed as part of a joint venture.

Lycos, a wholly owned subsidiary of Daum Communications in Korea, plans to relaunch its search services in Europe, search and business development general manager Edward Noel said in a press release. The company will gradually roll out “locally targeted content verticals,” he said.

Lycos’ brands include Hotbot, Tripod, Angelfire, Gamesville and WhoWhere. The company claims 30 million users per month. The company was acquired by Daum in 2004.
