Genome sequencing firm Knome teams with CLIA-approved lab

By Mass High Tech staff

Cambridge-based genomics services provider Knome Inc. has teamed up with SeqWright, of Houston, Texas, to provide genomic analysis through a federally approved laboratory for clinical testing. SeqWright is certified by Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) to meet federal standards in clinical sample processing.

The company offers two sequencing and analysis services, KnomeSelect and KnomeComplete, to consumers. KnomeSelect runs gene sequencing with complete analysis for $24,500 for individuals and $19,500 per person for couples and families. Knome is marketing the service as a cost of under $1 per gene for consumers. KnomeComplete offers a more comprehensive service intended to analyze traits and disease associations, Knome officials reported in a press release.

In an earlier news report, George Church, a co-founder of the firm and professor of genetics at Harvard Medical School, said that Knome’s service can sequence entire families, enable the tracking of gene-specific inheritance patterns across generations, and identify shared traits.

SeqWright conducts research and clinical trial support in the fields of molecular biology and genomics. It has received CLIA certification, as well as a clinical laboratory license awarded through the state of California.

In May, Knome made headlines when it sought to raise money for genomic research by auctioning off a personal entire genome sequencing, with related interpretation services, on eBay Inc.’s marketplace.  The winning bid, and only bid offered on eBay at the minimum price, was $68,000.
