MassEcon welcomes seven businesses to state

By Efrain Viscarolasaga

At a first-of-its-kind event today, the Massachusetts Alliance for Economic Development (MassEcon) welcomed seven new companies that have relocated or opened their doors in the Bay State.

The first of what MassEcon’s Ambassador network is calling its Corporate Welcome Series, the event aimed to demonstrate the lure of the Boston areas to both large and small companies from a variety of industries. Honored guests ran the gamut from heath care and biotechnology companies, to software and renewable energy.

MassEcon Chairman Jerry Sargent, executive vice president of Citizens Bank, called the companies “a wonderful addition to the commonwealth’s business community,”

Among the honorees were two European firms that have recently opened offices in the area, Spanish biotech company Progenika BioPharma SA and Andorra-based medical device firm Soadco SL, and two startups relocated from other New England states, Lowell-based software developer Kadient Inc. (formerly of N.H.) and Lexington-based drug discovery toolmaker Raindance Technologies Inc. (formerly of Conn.).

In addition, Brookfield Renewable Power, a new division of Canada-based Brookfield Asset Management Inc. recently opened its new office in Marlborough, and advanced football helmet technology startup Xenith LLC opened its doors in Lowell.

The seventh company honored, Boston-based CeltiCare Health Plan of Massachusetts Inc., was created through a partnership between Celtic Insurance Co. and Caritas Christi Health Care.

“We are becoming much more welcoming as a state,” said Susan Houston, executive director of MassEcon.

Launched in 1993 by the Governor’s Council for Growth and Technology, MassEcon promotes Massachusetts by providing information services to companies seeking to expand or relocate to the state. The group oversees the Massachusetts Ambassadors program, a network of senior executives throughout Massachusetts who serve as peer contacts for companies evaluating Massachusetts as an expansion location.
