Tiananmen’s 20th: Jenzabar founder launches $1M humanitarian effort
By Mass High Tech Staff
Chai Ling, the founder and president of Cambridge-based Jenzabar Inc. and a leader in the protests in Tiananmen Square, has announced a $1 million humanitarian initiative on the 20th anniversary of the Tianenmen massacre.
The $1 million pledge, made through the Jenzabar Foundation, a charitable and educational organization, will provide five years of financial support to help victims of the Tiananmen massacre; support the Truth Movement in providing an honest history of Tiananmen; support human rights activities in China and other countries; and support a democratic China.
Chai was a leader in the peaceful protests at Tianamen on June 4, 1989. She hid for 10 months from the Chinese government and escaped to the U.S. She learned English, attended Princeton University and earned business and international relations degrees, and launched Jenzabar Inc., a now 11-year-old company that makes software for higher education.
In a press release, Chai said, “I am able to fulfill one of my long-term goals: to help the movement in a major way... We will continue to work for a peaceful, free and democratic China.”
Chai previously launched the Jenzabar Foundation, financed by Jenzabar Inc., to recognize students leading global humanitarian efforts. The organization provides grants to universities and non-profit organizations with similar missions.
