Mass. officials seek wind power feedback
By Mass High Tech staff
The Massachusetts Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs is planning two upcoming public sessions in the Berkshires and Cape Cod to solicit feedback about potential wind power development projects on public lands in the state.
The two sessions -- scheduled June 17 in Bourne and June 24 in Pittsfield -- will discuss power and siting issues of wind power. Leading the sessions will be Rick Sullivan, commissioner of the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation, as well as Philip Giudice, commissioner of the state Department of Energy Resources. The discussion is open to the public and will include local legislators as well.
As part of Governor Deval Patrick’s Green Jobs Act of 2008, the state has formulated a study, the “Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Potential at State-Owned Facilities,” and found that the state has the potential to generate from wind power almost half of the statewide 2,000 megawatt goal by 2020. The majority of wind power-primed areas in Massachusetts include either coastal regions or ridge tops in the western part of the state.
The Green Jobs Act, signed last August, promises to promote and create new jobs in environmental fields through $68 million worth of grants over the next five years.
