NSF funds Boston tech scholarships at Northeastern

By Brendan Lynch

Northeastern University reports it has launched a National Science Foundation-funded scholarship program to encourage local students to pursue degrees in the science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields.

The school said it hopes the scholarships will encourage young people to pursue leadership roles in engineering. Students from partnering community colleges, such as MassBay, Middlesex, Northern Essex, and Roxbury Community Colleges will be eligible for three yearly scholarships of $10,000 each, under which they can attend Northeastern as transfer students.

Student scholars in the Investing in Tomorrow’s Engineering Leaders (ITEL) program will have the opportunity to work with faculty and staff on research projects at the Bernard M. Gordon Center for Subsurface Sensing and Imaging Systems, an NSF Engineering Research Center, Northeastern said. The students will also have access to mentoring and other support services provided by the school’s faculty and staff, and gain professional experience working six-month stints for companies or organizations under Northeastern’s co-op program.

The nearly $575,000 grant will fund the ITEL program for five years beginning in the fall of 2010, according to Northeastern. Boston-area high school students will receive $40,000 to put toward college tuition in four $10,000 yearly installments. The ITEL grant comes from the NSF’s Scholarships in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (S-STEM) program, which is intended to help academic institutions offer support to academically talented and financially needy students who want to earn degrees in the STEM fields.
