Schilling’s 38 Studios buys Big Huge Games
By Mass High Tech staff
Maynard-based 38 Studios LLC, a game development company founded by former Boston Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling, says it has bought Big Huge Games from its parent, game publisher THQ Inc.
While officials at 38 Studios did not disclose financial details of the acquisition, they did say in a release that buying Big Huge was a “critical step” in rolling out a variety of entertainment products based on its original fantasy concepts, codenamed Copernicus.
38 Studios gets all of the proprietary IP, tools, technology, assets and works-in-progress of Big Huge. The Maryland-based company is best known for its Rise of Nations real-time-strategy game titles. 38 Studios, however, is generally believed to be working on a massively multi-player online role playing game, such as Blizzard Entertainment’s World of Warcraft.
According to 38 Studios CEO and president Brett Close, Big Huge brings a cross-platform gaming engine that works with both real-time-strategy and role-playing games, giving 38 Studios the chance to make as many gaming products based on Copernicus as possible.
Founded in 2000 by veteran game developers Brian Reynolds, Jason Coleman, Dave Inscore and Tim Train, Big Huge’s team includes lead designer Ken Rolston, a 25-year role-playing game designer and co-creator of Oblivion and Morrowind. Creative director Brian Reynolds was recognized as one of the “49 Greatest Developers” in last month’s PC Gamer magazine.
The Big Huge Games team will be integrated into 38 Studios but will remain based in Timonium, Md.
The Copernicus fantasy intellectual property is being developed by Worcester-based fantasy author R. A. Salvatore and California-based Todd McFarlane, creator of comic book character Spawn and one of the founders of Image Comics.
