Navy to pay General Dynamics $16M for submarine repairs

By Mass High Tech staff

General Dynamics Electric Boat Corp. reports it has won $15.8 million from the U.S. Navy for repair work on the USS Hartford.

Under the contract, Groton, Conn.-based Electric Boat will plan and perform repairs on the Los Angeles-class attack submarine, which was damaged in March when it collided with an amphibious ship, the USS New Orleans, in the Strait of Hormuz. Electric Boat will perform planning work, material procurement and fabrication of a hull patch and a bridge access trunk, as well as planning and material procurement for the port retractable bow plane. Electric Boat also will perform planning work on the sail to restore USS Hartford to full-service condition. Work on the contract is expected to be completed by November.

Last month, Electric Boat landed $10.3 million from the Navy for non-nuclear maintenance and repair support at the Naval Submarine Base in New London, Conn. Under the modification to a previously won deal, Electric Boat will continue to provide non-nuclear maintenance and repair for operational nuclear submarines, floating dry-docks, support and service craft, and other equipment.

Also last month, General Dynamics Corp. reports that its Armament and Technical Products unit landed a $28 million contract modification from the Army for heavy machine guns at its Saco, Maine, facility.

General Dynamics (NYSE:GD), based in Falls Church, Va., employs approximately 92,300 people worldwide. The defense contractor reported a 2008 net income of $2.46 billion on revenue of $29.3 billion.
