WPI professor Billiar named Fulbright scholar
By Mass High Tech Staff
Worcester Polytechnic Institute professor Kristen Billiar has received a Fulbright Scholarship to conduct tissue engineering research in Ireland, according to the school.
Billiar will work at the National University of Ireland Galway during the 2009-2010 academic year. Billiar is the first life sciences faculty member to receive a Fulbright grant and fourteenth member of the school’s current faculty to be awarded a Fulbright grant, the school said.
Under the grant, Billiar will study the mechanics of nanoscale scaffolds for tissue engineering with Abhay Pandit, director of the Network of Excellence for Functional Biomaterials. The research will focus on developing a detailed understanding of the relationship between the structure and mechanical functioning of connective tissue, in order to build engineered replacements for diseased tissue. The researchers plan to compile their research into a textbook, the school said.
Billiar joined the WPI faculty in 2002, after receiving a Ph.D. in bioengineering at the University of Pennsylvania and working as a staff engineer at Organogenesis Inc.
The Fulbright Program, which is funded by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, is an international educational exchange program. The program sends 800 U.S. faculty members and other professionals abroad to lecture and conduct research in a wide variety of academic and professional fields.
