SiCortex calculates a need for new $1M funding round

By Mass High Tech Staff

High-performance computing systems maker SiCortex Inc. of Maynard has closed on $1 million in its latest funding round, according to federal documents.

The company originally opened a Series B round in 2006, and closed it last September, having raised $37 million. At that time, officials said it hoped the Series B round would be enough to bring it to profitability, but it did not rule out raising more funds.

SiCortex has developed a “plug and play” high-performance computing architecture, aimed at replacing the traditional x86 cluster computing architecture based upon big name processor makers like Intel Corp. and Advanced Micro Devices Inc. SiCortex’s architecture makes teraflop (1 trillion calculations per second) computing accessible to more than just the handful of research centers and government agencies that have been the traditional supercomputing customers, officials said.

SiCortex sold a total of 60 high-performance computing systems in 2008, according to CEO Chris Stone, and officials expect the low-power wave to continue this year, particularly as the firm moves into new geographies. SiCortex has hired two distributors in Europe over the past six months and is in the process of adding two more. According to Stone, the company has also received inquiries from other parts of the world, particularly Dubai and Australia, but is holding back making any sales in those regions until a support network is established in each region.
