Westwood-based MyVu Corp., a maker of personal optical displays, has raised $3.25 million in private funding, according to federal documents.
Originally founded as MicroOptical Corp. in 1995 by former Kopin Corp. chief scientist Mark Spitzer, MyVu received $11.5 million in funding in 2006, when the company moved from specialty applications to the consumer market. Investors include Intel Capital, The Hillman Co., and Atlas Venture of Waltham.
MyVu’s optical displays, which look like futuristic sunglasses, allow a user to get a personal view of video content from a cell phone, iPod, iPhone, portable DVD player or other device. Over the past year, the viewer has steadily penetrated consumer outlets, and is available at a number of retail outlets, including Best Buy, select Apple Stores and select Radio Shacks.
MyVu’s premium product, the Crystal, which includes earbuds, retails for about $300, while the previous iteration, which comes in a regular version (Solo Plus) and one with sunglass lenses (Shades), goes for about $100.
