David Danielson is leaving his associate position at General Catalyst Partners to join the U.S. Department of Energy, General Catalyst partner Hemant Taneja confirmed yesterday.
Danielson, whose work at General Catalyst included the firm’s investments in LumenZ Inc., Wakonda Technologies Inc. and California-based Stion Corp., has been regarded as a rising star in Boston’s cleantech investing community.
An MIT Ph.D. in materials science in engineering, before coming to General Catalyst in 2007 Danielson worked with semiconductors at Intel Corp., Applied Materials and IBM Corp., according to his biography on generalcatalyst.com. He is the founder of the MIT Energy Club and the co-founder of the MIT Energy Conference and the New England Clean Energy Council.
Taneja said General Catalyst plans to seek a candidate to re-fill the position.
“It’s great to see they’re hiring such smart people like David, and with such relevant experience,” he said. “If you look at where a lot of (government grant) money goes, it’s often (the case that) folks don’t have the kind of experience David has at thinking ahead -- ‘What does application of research really mean?’”
The news was first reported by the website PEHub.com yesterday.
Danielson will work for the Department of Energy’s Advanced Research Projects Agency grant program, which has been funded by the Obama adminstration to the tune of $400 million, PEHub reported.
Danielson was unavailable to be interviewed in time for this article.
