MIT $100K Biz Plan finalists announced

The MIT$100K Business Plan Competition has announced five of its six 2009 finalists.

The winner of the $100K will be announced on May 13 at a ceremony at the Ray and Maria Stata Center at MIT. Heartland Robotics founder Rodney Brooks, who is also an MIT professor on leave, will deliver the keynote speech at the ceremony.

MIT has identified six different tracks, and the winner of each track will become a finalist competing for the overall $100K top prize.

Global Cycle Solutions, which has developed a bicycle-powered corn-sheller for use in developing countries, won the development rack.
• Cambridge Eyenovations, which is developing drug-eluting contact lenses intended to replace eye drops, won the life sciences track.
• MeterLive, which uses mobile phones to provide billboard analytics, won the mobile track.
• YouTea, which has developed an over-the-counter treatment to a woman’s health issue, won the products and services track.
Ksplice, which has developed a system for operating system updates for better security, won the web/IT track.

Runners up include MobaSola in the development track, Novphage in the life sciences track, Dinube in the mobile track, AuthorsGlobe in the products and services track, and FenSiZu and Net Virta in the web/IT track.

The winner of the energy track will be announced on May 12, as it doubles as the $200,000 MIT Clean Energy Prize.
