Kenneth Bate named Archemix CEO
By Mass High Tech staff
Archemix Corp., a Cambridge biotech focused on aptamer-based therapeutics, has appointed Kenneth Bate to the role of president and CEO of the company. Bate replaces president and interim CEO Duncan Higgons, who is leaving Archemix to join another biotech firm, company officials said in a statement.
Bate formerly worked as president and CEO at Lexington-based drug developer NitroMed Inc. (Nasdaq: NTMD). Prior to that position, he served several roles, including chief financial officer, at Millennium Pharmaceuticals Inc. and CFO at Biogen Idec Inc. Bate also is a founding partner at investment banking firm JSB Partners.
Bate serves on the board of directors at Cubist Pharmaceuticals Inc. and AVEO Pharmaceuticals Inc. He graduated from Williams College and from the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business with a master’s degree in business administration.
Archemix specializes in developing aptamers, which are short nucleic acid sequences that bind to proteins. Archemix sees potential for aptamer therapeutics to treat inflammatory disorders, such as rheumatoid arthritis and inflammatory bowel disease.
