VKernel gets $7M in second funding round

By Galen Moore

VKernel Corp. has secured a $7.1 million Series B round of funding from return investors Polaris Venture Partners and Hummer Winblad Venture Partners, according to documents filed yesterday with federal regulators. New investor Longworth Venture Partners led VKernel's Series B round, according to a draft version of an announcement provided this morning by a company spokesman. Longworth partner Vilanjana Bhownik will represent the firm on VKernel's board.

The Portsmouth, N.H.-based maker of virtualization software brought its total venture funding to $11.7 million.

Polaris general partner David Barrett and Hummer Winblad managing director Mitchell Kurtzman will retain their seats on VKernel’s board. The company also added former Onaro CEO Doug McNary as an advisor, bringing its total number of directors to five.

VKernel executives were traveling and could not immediately be reached Wednesday morning, but a spokesman issued a statement from founder and CEO Alex Bakman citing the company’s “high-velocity sales and marketing strategy,” and low-cost, simple products.

VKernel makes software designed to enhance virtual server performance, lower operating costs and simplify management. The company was founded in January of 2007, and, according
to a spokesman, raised its first venture round in January, 2008.
