Arsenal Medical, formerly WMR Biomedical, lands $8.2M funding

By Galen Moore

Arsenal Medical Inc. has raised $8.2 million of a $12.2 million Series C round, according to documents filed last month with federal regulatory authorities.

The company, which changed its name in February from WMR Biomedical Inc., operates in stealth mode out of Watertown offices. It was founded in 2005 by North Bridge Venture Partners general partner Carmichael Roberts, with Harvard University’s George Whitesides and Robert Langer of MIT.

The company is developing treatments for ophthalmology and cardiovascular disease using biomaterials, said president and CEO Scott Rader, formerly president and CEO of California-based Bacchus Vascular Inc.

Arsenal’s board, according to the document, includes Essex Woodlands Health Ventures managing director Guido Neels, Polaris Venture Partners managing general partner Terry McGuire, North Bridge Venture Partners general partner James Goldstein and Intersouth Partners general partner Dennis Dougherty.

According to the VentureWire news service, the company last raised $13.2 million in early 2008. Rader declined to address the company’s fundraising history, saying a public release is expected in coming weeks.
