PerkinElmer CEO Friel named board chairman
By Mass High Tech staff
Lab and research equipment provider PerkinElmer Inc. has assigned an additional role for current president and CEO Robert Friel as chairman of the board of directors, the company announced Tuesday at its annual shareholders meeting.
Friel’s new role follows the 10-year tenure of former chairman Gregory Summe, “who did not stand for reelection,” PerkinElmer officials said in a statement.
Friel has been working for PerkinElmer (NYSE: PKI) since 1999, when he served as chief financial officer and later as vice chairman and president of PerkinElmer’s Life and Analytical Sciences business, followed by his role in 2007 as chief operating officer.
Last month, Friel told Mass High Tech that the company has been weathering the economic downturn by embracing its “new strategic alignment into human health and environmental health.” He also said that while the company expects to have its growth rates impacted in 2009, it is “not planning to take any large restructuring actions.”
Waltham-based PerkinElmer reported revenue of almost $2 billion in 2008. It has approximately 8,500 employees in more than 150 countries.
