Children’s Hospital Boston is hosting a two-month online game competition in which kids raise real money as they discover the sources of diseases and solve online puzzles in a game called “Caduceus.”
The funds raised will go toward research into treatments for serious childhood diseases, including cancer, diabetes and heart disease. Similar to a walk-a-thon, youngsters can raise money from sponsors as they move past levels in the educational online game. Caduceus is part of the hospital’s Generation Cures program.
Playing the game, kids try to track down the source of a mysterious plague. As they solve puzzles, kids are challenged to track down the source of the disease, isolate its causes and mix and match ingredients to find a cure. The further the player gets in a game, the more of their sponsor’s pledge is donated to Children’s. The two-month competition is scheduled to end June 14.
The Generation Cures website also features videos filmed by former patients of Children’s Hospital Boston and an animated cartoon series about a high school rock band.
