Sugar Labs beta tests USB-enabled kids’ OS

By Brendan Lynch

Educational nonprofit Sugar Labs reports it has released a beta test of “Sugar on a Stick” -- a version of the operating system for children that works from a USB memory drive.

The nonprofit said the operating system is available for download onto a USB drive at http://wiki.sugarlabs.org/go/sugar_on_a_stick. Sugar on a Stick lets the user start a computer with Sugar and store a child’s data on the stick without touching the host computer’s hard drive.

Sugar Labs said it is looking for user feedback to refine the software. The nonprofit plans on releasing the first version of Sugar on a Stick in the third quarter.

In March, Sugar Labs released the latest version of Sugar, version .84.  The update features more collaborative activities. It also allows users to suspend and resume “activities,” which is Sugar’s term for programs — something requested by teacher feedback, according to the nonprofit.

Sugar Labs founder Walter Bender, formerly of the MIT Media Lab, left the nonprofit One Laptop per Child organization, where he was president of software and content, to start Sugar Labs in May 2008. Sugar was the operating system of the XO laptop until OLPC struck a deal with Microsoft Corp. to use Windows last year.

Sugar is free open-source software, available for download at www.sugarlabs.org.
