GMZ Energy Inc., a Newton-based maker of thermoelectric materials developed from nanotechnology developed at MIT, has named former Continuum Photonics Inc. co-founder Aaron Bent as CEO. Bent was appointed to the position by GMZ Energy founder and former CEO Mike Clary, who will remain on the company’s board of directors.
The appointment marks GMZ Energy’s transition from “product innovation to product realization,” according to a company statement.
GMZ Energy was formed in 2007 based on the technology licences of MIT professor and researcher Gang Chen, a founder of the company. Other co-founders include Zhifeng Ren, a professor of Physics at Boston College, and Clary, a former entrepreneur-in-residence at venture firm Kleiner Perkins Caulfield & Byers.
Bent was part of the first Clean Energy Fellowship Program created by the New England Clean Energy Council to help train successful entrepreneurs from other disciplines in the clean energy sector. He has served as a general manager for Polatis Photonics, a subsidiary of Andover-based networking equipment maker Polatis Inc., and was co-founder and president of Continuum, a venture-funded developer of solid-state electroceramic materials that was acquired by Polatis in 2005.
GMZ Energy’s thermoelectric material aims to turn waste heat into electrical power using an environmentally friendly alloy. The material optimizes cooling in refrigerators and air conditioners, generates power from heat sources such as automotive exhaust systems, and enables electricity generation from renewable sources, according to company statements.
The company has raised an undisclosed amount of seed funding from Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers.
