Waters Corp. reports it will establish a center at the University of Warwick in England focused on biomedical mass spectrometry research.
The Milford-based research laboratory technology company will establish the Waters Centre for BioMedical Mass Spectrometry, a center of excellence in mass spectrometry techniques, at the Conventry, U.K., university. The center is intended to provide scientists with access to mass spectrometry technology in life sciences, such as Waters’ Synapt High-Definition MS HDMS system.
Financial terms of the partnership were not disclosed.
In February, Waters (NYSE:WAT) bought Thar Instruments Inc., a privately held maker of supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC) in Pittsburgh. Financial details of the acquisition were not disclosed, though Waters officials said at the time the buyout was “estimated to be neutral to Waters 2009 earnings.” Thar’s SFC separates chemical compounds via an extraction system, using carbon dioxide.
Last fall, Waters announced it had developed a way to determine if milk and infant formula has been contaminated with melamine. The method follows guidelines set forth by the Ministry of Science and Technology in China, following an increase in the number of cases of infant kidney stones and renal failure related to melamine ingestion.
Waters reported a 2008 net profit of $322.5 million on revenue of $1.6 billion.
