By Mass High Tech Staff
Defense titan General Dynamics Corp. reports that its Armament and Technical Products unit has landed a $28 million contract modification from the Army for heavy machine guns.
The U.S. Army Tank Automotive Command in Rock Island, Ill., awarded the new deal for General Dynamics ATP to make more M2HB machine guns. The original contract was awarded in 2007, and this new option brings total value to date to more than $100 million.
General Dynamics ATP says it should start shipping product under this new contract in December.
The guns will be produced at General Dynamics ATP’s Saco, Maine, facility, which has produced more than 25,000 M2 heavy barrel machine guns to the U.S. government since 1979, according to company officials. The program will be managed from the company’s Burlington, Vt., Technology Center.
Headquartered in Charlotte, N.C., General Dynamics Armament and Technical Products designs, develops and produces armament systems, defensive armor, aerospace components, mobile shelter systems, and biological and chemical detection systems.
General Dynamics (NYSE:GD), based in Falls Church, Va., employs approximately 92,300 people worldwide. The defense contractor reported a 2008 net income of $2.46 billion on revenue of $29.3 billion.
