$1M grant adds green jobs to Mass. cities

By Mass High Tech staff

Low-income workers in Lowell, Worcester, Springfield, Brockton and Pittsfield are getting a boost in work force training in the clean energy sector. The cities were chosen by Governor Deval Patrick to receive five grants, totaling $1 million, under the Energy and Environmental Affairs’ (EEA) Pathways out of Poverty grant program.

The program, part of the Commonwealth’s Green Jobs Act, was approved last year for financing through the Massachusetts Alternative and Clean Energy Investment Trust Fund. The grants will be used to establish partnerships between five organizations and local clean energy employers, organizations and educational institutions.

The EEA cited programs aimed at people earning incomes of 300 percent below the federal poverty level to receive the five $200,000 grants, including JFYNetWorks (Boston, serving Lowell); Quinsigamond Community College (Worcester); Berkshire Community College (Pittsfield); Regional Employment Board of Hampden County Inc. (Springfield); and Massasoit Community College (Brockton).

The Green Jobs Act, signed last August, promises to promote and create new jobs in environmental fields through $68 million worth of grants over the next five years.
