MassNetComms honors Kamen, Miner, Markey, among others

By Mass High Tech staff

Inventor Dean Kamen set the tone for the 2009 MassNetComms Awards last night in Cambridge, as he exhorted the crowd to support students like those in his FIRST Robotics Challenge, saying: “If you like living in the innovation hub of the universe, invest in it.”

Segway inventor Kamen, founder of DEKA Research and Development Corp. in Manchester, N.H., was honored with the Workforce Development Award for his role as founder of FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition in Science and Technology), a nationwide program that helps set young people on the path to a life in science and technology.

The Massachusetts Network Communications Council this year changed the structure of its awards, taking the two categories Company of the Year and Product of the Year and breaking each into four segments -- Mobile; Broadband Infrastructure and Security; Cloud Computing, Virtualization and Data Warehousing/Storage; and Video, Search and Social Media.

The closest to a sweep was Crossbeam Systems Inc. of Boxborough, which won Company of the Year in the Broadband Infrastructure and Security category, and whose CEO, Peter Fiore, won in the CEO Of The Year -- Private Company category. Cambridge-based mobile search and advertising platform maker JumpTap Inc. also won two awards, walking away with the Largest Private Financing prize for its $26 million round in August, as well as the Mobile Product of the Year.

Google Inc.’s Rich Miner was honored as Industry Player of the Year, for guiding Google’s mobile software strategy from his offices in Cambridge. Miner has since been named to be one of two heads of Google’s new corporate venture capital arm, Google Ventures.

Steven Dodge, former CEO and chairman, American Tower, was inducted into the Network Communications Hall of Fame for 2008, and in a suprisingly blunt acceptance speech he told the attendees that their human capital was the most improtant asset they had, and there was no room in any company for people with questionable ethical standards or “pissers and moaners.”

Also honored was Congressman Edward Markey, named the Most Effective Policy Maker of the year, for his long tenure supporting telecommunications and Internet openness and competition.

The list of industry honorees is below:

• CEO of the Year -- Public: Paul Sagan, Akamai Technologies Inc.

• CEO of the Year -- Private: Pete Fiore, Crossbeam Systems Inc.

• Mobile Company of the Year: Starent Networks Corp.

• Broadband Infrastructure and Security Company of the Year: Crossbeam Systems Inc.

• Cloud Computing, Virtualization and Data Warehousing/Storage Company of the Year: Netezza Corp.
