Flybridge brings Lockwood on for clean tech focus

By Galen Moore

Flybridge Capital Partners has appointed Robin Lockwood, a former health care consultant with a doctorate in global climate change monitoring, as a senior associate, the Boston venture capital firm reports.

“What makes us so excited about getting someone like Robin on board is it really underscores the commitment to the clean tech and the med tech industries,” said general partner Michael Greeley. Flybridge was looking to deepen its investment team’s knowledge in those areas, he said.

Prior to Flybridge, Lockwood was a business strategy consultant at The Boston Consulting Group, according to her bio on Flybridge’s website. There, she focused on health care clients. Prior to Boston Consulting Group, Lockwood, worked with NASA on her Harvard University Ph.D. dissertation in engineering and applied sciences, on a project to develop new approaches to climate change monitoring, prediction and control.

Flybridge’s first-quarter 2009 investments included return second rounds in FirstBest Systems Inc., a Bedford maker of underwriting management system software; Virtual Computer Inc., a Westford-based maker of virtual desktops; and ClickSquared Inc., a Waltham-based direct marketing software company. Flybridge also participated in a Series C follow-on round for Newton-based SimpleTuition, which makes an online financial aid tool.

Exits in the quarter included the acquisition last week of Magen BioSciences Inc., a Waltham-based biotech focused on cosmetic technology for the skin, by North Carolina-based PPD Inc. for $14.5 million in cash. In 2006, Magen reported a total of $17.2 million invested in the company.

Earlier in the quarter, Flybridge portfolio company mValent Inc., a Waltham-based maker of application configuration management software, sold to Oracle Corp. (Nasdaq: ORCL) for undisclosed terms. MValent had received a total investment of over $20 million.

An earlier online version misidentified Flybridge portfolio company Virtual Computer. The company is based in Westford and makes virtual desktops.
