RXi adds Millennium vet Varanasi to biz dev role
By Marc Songini
Worcester-based RXi Pharmaceuticals Corp. has appointed Ramani Varanasi as its vice president of business development and promoted current CFO Stephen DiPalma to the office of executive vice president of business operations and CFO, and director of discovery research Joanne Kamens to the role of senior director of that department.
RXi (Nasdaq: RXII), a biopharmaceutical company developing proprietary RNA interference (RNAi) drugs, said Varanasi has more than 15 years of experience in strategic alliances, licenses and collaborations in the pharmaceutical industry. Her role now will be to develop product and technology partnering strategies and head all new and existing business development relationships for RXi.
Previously, Varanasi spent nine years at Millennium Pharmaceuticals Inc. of Cambridge (now branded as Millennium: the Takeda Oncology Co.), in a variety of management roles in technology licensing and technology and product business development. While at Millennium, she worked as director of business development. She also worked as director of corporate development at Momenta Pharmaceuticals. Her most recent job was head of business development at Archemix Corp., where she handled strategic development and oversaw several strategic technology, research collaboration and product alliances. Varanasi holds an MBA from Northeastern University.
DiPalma will formally add operational, development and strategic planning responsibilities to his existing job duties. In her expanded role, Kamens will lead RXi’s research group to evaluate new compounds and delivery technologies, and manage RXi’s inflammatory disease program.
